Homemade Hydration Drink: Coconut Water, Blue Spirulina & Chia Seeds

I make this more than almost anything else in my kitchen — and it started as a joke, honestly. I wanted something that felt more exciting than plain water, but without the sugar (or the food dye) in most sports drinks. A few ingredients later, this became my go-to.

It’s naturally blue, a little fizzy, and genuinely more refreshing than anything you’ll find in a bottle at the store.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups coconut water
  • ½ tsp blue spirulina powder
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • Sparkling water, to top off
  • Ice

Steps:

  1. Add the coconut water and blue spirulina to a jar or shaker bottle. Shake or whisk well until fully combined and the color is smooth (no clumps).
  2. Stir in the chia seeds and let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes, so the chia seeds start to plump up and go a little jelly-textured.
  3. Fill a glass with ice, pour the mixture over it, then top with sparkling water for the fizz.
  4. Give it one more gentle stir and drink right away, while it’s cold and fizzy.

Notes:
Blue spirulina powder can be found on Amazon or at most health food stores — a little goes a long way, so start with less if you’re new to it. This keeps well for about a day in the fridge, but the fizz is best fresh.
